Big Idea
Despite its promise as decarbonization’s skeleton key, hydrogen remains one of the world’s dirtiest industries. Over 95% of global hydrogen production today is fossil-based, spewing nearly a Gt CO₂e per year. Many have long sought to produce “green” H2 from water and clean power, yet production at $2/kg – the price at which green hydrogen is cost-competitive with fossil fuels – has proven elusive.
How it Works
Green hydrogen is made via electrolysis whereby clean power splits water (H₂O) into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂). To meet the specs of existing and emerging hydrogen off-takers then requires costly pressurization and heating. Whereas other electrolyzers pressurize and heat post-production, Supercritical directly outputs hydrogen with industry-spec temperature and pressure, slashing end costs.
Unfair Advantage
Supercritical’s membrane-less cell eliminates the use of expensive metal catalysts and unlocks operation at high pressure. This enables off-takers to use hydrogen outputs directly without any additional and costly steps. Combined, these advantages lead to over 85% round trip efficiency, beating out the best-in-class green hydrogen processes and charting a path to $1/kg delivered hydrogen.
